About the project

How it all started

Building for the NHS means tackling complexity head-on — from governance to data standards. Our client partnered with us to transform a bold healthtech idea into an NHS-ready MVP, designed for compliance, scalability, and real adoption.

In just two months, we delivered a DSPT- and GDPR-compliant solution powered by a secure Azure infrastructure. With deep technical expertise and a senior-led team, we turned regulatory challenges into a competitive advantage, setting the stage for a faster, safer market entry.

Our approach

The key was finding the balance between delivering an MVP quickly and building solid foundations for compliance and future growth.

The challenge

Building digital products for the NHS means facing operational and regulatory complexity from the very beginning. Even the simplest healthcare apps need to meet strict standards for data security, access control, and compliance.

In this environment, many digital health projects stall because compliance isn't embedded into the product's DNA. Our mission was to change that: design and deliver an MVP that was "compliance-ready" from day one, reducing risk and accelerating NHS adoption.

Our Approach

How we build an NHS-ready system

  • Framework

    Startup speed delivery

The project followed an Agile framework with two-week sprints, combining speed with regulatory awareness. Key elements included:

    • Early compliance considerations embedded in the backlog and architecture
    • Iterative delivery to continuously validate direction and usability
    • Planning beyond the MVP to support long-term product growth

This approach helped us strike the right balance: delivering fast while ensuring the system met the governance standards expected in healthcare.

Technology Stack & Features

01

Core Patient Pathway

A structured, secure, and scalable digital journey supporting the ENT (hearing care) workflow from referral to clinical outcome.

  • Secure Patient Access — Patients access their case via a secure, passwordless "magic link" (email/SMS), ensuring both usability and compliance with NHS data access requirements.
  • Dynamic Questionnaire & Triage — Patients complete logic-driven questionnaires that adapt based on responses. This enables structured data capture and supports triage decisions, including routing patients to appropriate next steps or additional assessments.
  • Patient Profile & Case Overview — A centralized patient view combining questionnaire responses, appointment details, and uploaded data, accessible to clinicians for efficient review.
  • Clinical Review & Decision Making — Clinicians can review structured case data (questionnaires, test results, images) and provide outcomes such as treatment recommendations, referrals, or further diagnostics.
02

Operational Workflow

Designed to streamline coordination between patients, clinicians, and administrators while reducing manual effort.

  • Referral & Patient Onboarding — Patient data is captured from referrals and used to initiate the digital pathway, including automated questionnaire distribution and tracking.
  • Appointment Booking & Management — Patients can self-book appointments based on clinician availability through an integrated calendar module, with confirmation and booking management capabilities.
  • Audiology Workflow Support — Audiologists can upload hearing test results and diagnostic assets (e.g. otoscopy images), which are structured and made available for clinician review.
  • Case Tracking & Status Management — Each patient case includes status tracking and an auditable flow from onboarding through to outcome, improving visibility and traceability.
03

Platform Capabilities

Core system features ensuring flexibility, scalability, and compliance.

  • Admin & Configuration Panel — Non-technical users can create and modify questionnaires using a dynamic form builder, enabling rapid updates without developer involvement.
  • Role-Based Access Control — Granular access management for patients, clinicians, and administrators, aligned with NHS data governance requirements.
  • Secure Data Handling — End-to-end encryption (in transit and at rest), secure file storage, and compliance with GDPR and NHS Data Security standards.
  • Cloud-Native Infrastructure (Azure) — Hosted on UK-based Microsoft Azure infrastructure, ensuring scalability, high availability, and alignment with NHS compliance expectations.
04

Extensibility & Future Pathways

Built as a modular platform that can expand beyond audiology into additional clinical pathways.

  • Configurable Clinical Pathways — The system is designed to support multiple structured pathways using the same questionnaire and routing engine.
  • Advanced Triage Scenarios (e.g. MRI Pathway) — Logic-based flows can trigger additional diagnostics (e.g. MRI referrals), enabling more advanced and specialized care pathways over time.
Impact & Outcome

Proud of the results

  • Ready in 2 months

Within two months, the first version of the compliant MVP was live on Azure and ready for stakeholder testing.

  • Startup speed

A small but senior team (1 Developer + 1 QA) delivered production-quality code at MVP speed, leveraging automation and best practices that are usually seen only in later product stages.

  • Compliance-ready MVP from day one

Reduced risk through early architectural foresight.

  • Integration Approach

A strong technical foundation for future integrations.

Compliance

We build compliant solutions

We don't just take tickets and write code. We challenge assumptions, propose architectural alternatives, and own the technical outcome.

Our commitment to HIPAA & GDPR

In healthcare technology, protecting sensitive patient data and adhering to stringent legal frameworks is non-negotiable. At ULAM LABS, we possess deep expertise in navigating the complex regulatory landscape surrounding healthcare data privacy and security, including HIPAA in the United States and GDPR in the European Union.

Comprehensive regulatory knowledge

We understand that HIPAA applies to covered entities and their business associates handling protected health information (PHI), requiring strict safeguards for electronic health data. Meanwhile, GDPR governs the processing of personal data of EU/EEA residents, including special categories such as health records, demanding explicit consent, data minimization, and rights like data access and erasure.

The team

Our team stays current with evolving regulations and best practices to ensure that every system we develop complies fully with these frameworks. We conduct thorough data inventories and risk assessments, mapping data flows and access controls to reduce vulnerabilities and demonstrate compliance readiness.
